Does your religion bring you comfort?

Backstory

Dad's been a church-going man his whole life. Lead bible studies and mens groups. Served as an usher every month. Now, in his final days, he's scared to death (excuse the pun). Isn't one's religion supposed to bring some level of comfort in this stage of life? Otherwise, what were all all those Sunday's for? All those hours studying the bible. All those meetings and tithes. What's the point?

Wench says,

I'm seeing something like that in my parents as well. I have my reasons for believing why, but mostly I think it's that so much of Christianity for many people is attaining a feeling. After years trying to keep the 'Jesus high', people burn out. I think they are left with whatever was under the feelings and it isn't always what they expected.

Shortly after I got married, my dad told my husband that love doesn't last, but marriage is a commitment. I think that's more or less what he believes about Christianity, whether he realizes it.

Sometimes there's too much guilt in religion to give a person comfort.
And when it comes to facing your final moments who knows how you will feel.

I hope to face that moment with grace but I've not always done always done that in life so we will see.

Oh or very good pain killers like Steve Jobs had.

I wrote a six about this the other day after listening to an excellent discussion about religious "nones".

Dragonflower says,

I once asked my minister, "if heaven is so great and wonderful, why don't we all just want to go today? Why do people get so afraid of dying?" He didn't have a particularly insightful answer. I got the feeling I wasn't supposed to ask questions like that. That was the trouble I had with organized religion. You were supposed to just accept things, not question them. But some things just didn't make sense to my very literal mind. So I prescribe to the Dalai Lama's view. My relgion is simple. My religion is kindness. I hope when the end comes, it will be kind to me and I will be kind in turn.

I don't think most people count atheism as a religion. But I enjoy my concrete understanding my relationships with reasons why things happen. I think it allows me to take responsibility for what happens in my life and I take comfort in the belief that I can start over or learn from those mistakes or revelations. Basically atheism gives me the cushiony feeling if I have control over my life and I can take it any direction.
