The difference is becoming harder to define as organized religions branch farther and farther out from their traditional roots. For example, I am not a Christian in the same sense that my parents are Christians. Their church, which is no longer called a church, but a 'community worship center' shudders at the word "tradition" and believes in a cushy self-interpreted relationship with God, where you point your finger at a random place in the Bible, decide what it means for you, and live your life based on those opinions.
The Christianity that I converted to has not changed in 2,000 years - which, surprisingly, is a really big problem for a lot of newer denominations. Increasingly, you see people sort of making up their own beliefs as they are convenient. Gpd or whatever is whatever we want him/her/it to be. He/she/it is not what an organized religion says it is and no organized religion has the full truth or authority. Whatever you believe is ok.
That is not what I believe, although it is what many of my close friends do.
to some the two concepts would be interchangeable. I think spirituality is more the personal, internal search for relationship with a greater power, finding meaning for existance and coming to terms with the finality of this life. Religion is possibly the external expression of some of this through ritual and ceremony or other forms.
Being religious is following a set of rules. Doing things out of tradition and forever trying to work your way up to God. Being spiritual is making Jesus Lord. Doing things because you love Him. Letting Him lead the way. That kind of thing.
SingerSomewhere, I thought something similar for a long time, until someone pointed out that without a structure, without a history, without tradition, 'letting Jesus lead the way' was really just another way of saying do what you think you should do, because it was limited to my own spiritual understanding and development to interpret where it was that I was being led.
Interesting posts. Thanks! My belief is religion is following organized ways. My belief on being spiritual is connecting to something bigger than yourself. Vague I know... I ask due to self study of all religions and psychology; and the intercept of each.
