Wench says,

Painting the living room of our old house. All the furniture was covered, as was the tv. Someone called because we didn't watch much tv anyway, and said we needed to turn on the news. We walked to a neighbor's house and borrowed a tv and spent hours just watching them repeat the footage. We couldn't take our eyes off of the screen.

I was at work. As the news coming over my office mate's little radio spiraled downward into some new kind of hell we couldn't even comprehend, we just stared at each other. My children were scattered across the globe, between military and school. My co-worker's father worked in the Pentagon and she couldn't reach him. Our company's main office was in NYC, in Greenwich, and they couldn't be reached either. Within a few hours of the inital attack, our plant manager sent everyone home. I'll never forget his voice on the PA system. "Go...be with your families...tell them you love them....God speed, my friends. We hope to see you tomorrow."

I was in my kitchen in North Jersey when we heard. I lived directly across the river from the New York Skyline. Got in my car and sped down with my camera. Everyone was in shock including me. News cameras and helicopters all over the place and the skies. My husband had retired from the Port Authority Police by 2 years. Lost 37 conrads. Four of them close friends. He has never recovered emotionally.
