My parents used to fight a lot. They still do, but not as often or as violently and with far more ambivalence toward each other. My older sister was usually pretty quiet and even-tempered but one time she couldn't take my parents screaming anymore. She went downstairs and stood between them and told them to stop fighting. My dad, who never lay a finger on us EVER, chased her through the front door, punched the glass and screamed at her for jumping out of the way of the flying pieces. That kind of shocked me.
(I should clarify - "violently" referred to their temperament, the literal spit flying, and occasionally the odd piece of furniture. But my parents never hit each other and only very, very, very rarely did my mom hit us - like four times in a childhood.)
I grew up in the country with dogs, cats, cows, horses, pigs, goats ... and it shocked and amazed me that some some kids and even adults had not nuzzled a puppy, fed a calf, rode a horse, played with a goat.
Things did not really shock me as a child. I had sort of accepted certain things as they were and childishly resolved to make the other things different.
Life with my mother was pretty extreme but life during foster care had it's own series of shocks, disappointments and "stuff".
As I grew older things became more shocking in retrospect.
Marymc I have the similar thoughts, everyone is commenting awesome responses and all I can think of that shocked me is when I found out what homosexuality was.
Actually I do remember something that kind of rattled my world. When my aunt told me my sister was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I kept that so secret. Even now I hesitate to tell people. One time a substitute teacher asked if she was going to a special school. The whole room stopped, I lied and told her no. I was mortified, thankfully no one asked me about it.
When I found out I had Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Up until that point we thought my fingers were just broken. I remember being shocked that I was able to get an "old person's" disease.
Being raped at the age of 5/ surrounded by bikers who wanted to hang me from a tree at the age of 33/ diagnosed with cancer in 2006/ later determined I was cancer-free in 2008/ any WAR news as seen on SEE-NN.
Visited a museum and saw a picture I always think of as the lady and the tiger. It was a modern painting of a naked woman standing next to a tiger. I remember being shocked that the lady was naked. As an adult, whenever I visit that museum, I always visit that painting.
