What movie beats the novel version?

Backstory

It's a common wisdom that the book invariably beats the movie, but there are occasional acceptions. I thought the novel "Hostage" was not as good as the movie, which is not saying much as I didn't think the movie was particularly good. In the novel it was like the author hit a strict word quota and so he ended it in a way in which the protagonist has no role in the outcome, but is merely an bystander.
