Do you collect anything and why?

Backstory

Dad had shaving mugs. Mom had school bells. Dad purged several years ago (I have 3) but I just spent $150 shipping 5 boxes of school bells across the country. I don't collect anything, and if I did, I wouldn't expect my son to continue it. Is it a southern thing? My cousin has Precious Moments figurines (GAH!) My uncle, Corvairs. My aunt, Longaberger Baskets.

NumbrOneAunt says,

i collect glass. not sure why - think i saw one thing that appealed to me and it just continued from there. i certainly wouldn't expect my nieces and nephew to continue, but at some point i do need to get them together and ask if anybody has an item they particularly want. your commentary on precious moments cracked me up! never saw anything appealing about them at all.

jl333 says,

Yup. Motorcycles, jetskis, quads, go-karts, dune buggies, etc. The backyard is now consumed with these things (even though I can only ride one at a time), and I'm told before I buy any more of these things, that I'll be buying more concrete (to store my shit of course!).

Wench says,

Cameras and frames. But to be fair, I use both.

ba_miracle says,

I can hardly collect my thoughts these days and dusting stuff is a pain.
I'd like to collect many stamps on my passport.
It used to be picture frames, candle sticks, knives and lamps.
At one point it was animals...Iguanas, dogs and cats.

I have all the things my daughter made in her school years.

HopeInPain says,

I collect decks of cards whenever I travel. It's a good way to remember where I've been (and many decks have pictures of the city/country, which is nice), plus, if I ever wanted to, I could actually use them, and sometimes I do!

KharisJo says,

old books bought in charity shops and bookmarks from places I travel to.

Hannahmo says,

Pokemon cards. I've been collecting them ever since I was a little kid. :)

marymc says,

Hannah... I wish I had saved my son's collection! I would have sent them to you.

Hannahmo says,

Aww that's too bad. Thanks for thinking of me though. :)

canadafreeze says,

I love rocks, but I'm not sure I'd call myself a collector. I use them in all sorts of ways. I love the history they represent.

Mourningdove says,

I collect a type of china that was given to me from a great-grandmother. Many of the pieces broke during a move, and I enjoy looking for pieces of it to make a complete set.

My Aunt who just passed away collected rabbits! every size shape material.... big garage sale coming soon....

ctgoods2 says,

secrets - apparently I'm a magnet for all sorts of them.

MsKillie says,

Agates, beer taps and growlers and Halloween decor.

JAD says,

I guess it would have to be blue glass of any kind in my china cabinet. I call my dinning room my blue room.

Wench says,

My great-great aunt has the largest collection of salt and pepper shakers I have ever seen.

TheAngstyPoet says,

Mom- mugs, feathers, stones
sister- old movies, old school video games, action figures

I collect old china, silver, and random pieces of paper. Old china & silver my MomMom (grandmother) taught me all the stamps & what to look for. Random pieces of paper- because I like to remember little things of the moment.

mzejay says,

Turtles, not live ones, just images. I keep them all at work so I am reminded that I'm always home.

Dhani says,

I collect statues of Buddha because in 1991 a small statue of Buddha washed up at my feet on 'Beach of the Dead' ('Playa de los Muertos') in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. Of course, having read about Buddha, I took it as a good omen. Three days later I received an all-expense paid invitation for a one-month visit to South East Asia, and notably in the enclosed brochure there would be ('COINCIDENCE'!)a visit to the largest Buddhist temple in the world at Borabudur in Indonesia!

A deal was made, and I was to push my Black wheelchair-bound athlete/friend through those countries in search of a Thai or Filipino bride for him. I'm working on a short story titled 'My Traveling Buddha' covering that experience (it's bittersweet), but I have not been able to complete it.

Dhani says,

(MIRACLE: Yes, I want more stamps in my passport!)

marymc says,

Dhani, that is awesome. Collecting miracles sounds wonderful.

MO_Thoughts2 says,

I like the squashed stamped pennies. On vacations, I try to keep a few pennies (to squash) and quarters (to pay for it) in my pocket. You never know when you'll see a machine tucked into a corner.

Believe says,

Skeleton keys. As for why, I like the symbolism. And I always wear at least one.

BanjoDan says,

i did have a collection of unused airline vomit bags from trips to about 30+ countries

jene2008 says,

I collect paperweights. It started from a gift that my boss gave me for Administrative Professionals Day. Now I can't pass a pretty one up. They are easily found in antique stores. None are exactly the same. I prefer the glass ones. I've always been a fan of glass. I also have a collection of glass bottles. Older coke bottles, Ball jars, etc.

L2L3 says,

Trouble. Saves trips to auctions, garage sales and stores. I apparently don't believe that I have enough of my own so I sometimes take on the troubles of others, just for fun and because I was programmed to do this by the cult. That would be the cult of two, consisting of my parents.
