A few years back, I had bought a truck that was stick shift. Didn't know how to even drive it off the lot! Eventually figured it out. Went nearly 160,000 miles on one clutch. The mechanic said that's almost unheard of, that I must have been a really good driver driving stick shift.
3 of the 4 cars I've owned have been manual. My current ride is a Toyota Tacoma, and I have 221,00 on the original clutch (how ya like them apples, JL?!). :D
Well then Dean, looks like I'll have to go out and buy another stick shift car just to see if I can surpass 221,000 orginal miles. Rock on Dean! My mechanic would be quite impressed with your driving skills.
Yep. I learned one day when I as 17 yrs old. My mom had to work overtime and I needed to get to work. So I took the one ton farm truck with the 5 speed. Work was in town about 8 miles away. I was a little hesitant about the last couple blocks because there was a stop sign on a hill. So I parked the truck in a lot before the hill and walked the last couple blocks. Then one of the guys at work walked down and drove the truck up to work. Mom wasn't happy with me !! Honestly, I think she thought is was funny, but she didn't want me in incur the wrath of my step dad. She brought the car up to me and took the truck home before he got home. He never knew.
Yes. My favorite was my someday to be ex-husbands Cobra SVT convertible 6 speed.
My S10 had over 200k miles on it when the clutch and master cylinder went out at the same time (no clutch and no brakes but luckily I had just left home.
There was a time when I borrowed a friends car just to go to the store and the clutch went out in the driveway.
Learned "how to" on a column gear shift and graduated to "stick" with a VW Beetle followed by a Corvair Monza. Thought I'd graduate to an XKE or at the very least, a TR3. Still waiting ...
I drove a stick for the first 14 years of my driving career. My mother thought my sister and I should learn so we'd never be stuck at home if our husbands borrowed our cars. Well, so far I've never been stuck at home with a car I didn't know how to drive.

I took my road test in a 1972 VW Karmen Ghia. Passed the first try. I felt pretty badass.jl333 says,

I learned to drive on a manual...three gears, on the column. I'm THAT old.accidentaltourist says,
P.S Also learned how to slip into gears without using the clutch. And how to "pop start" a car with a dead battery.jl333 says,
