One of my favorite songs is "Calling Out Your Name" by Rich Mullins, a Christian artist. He was every bit as much a poet as a singer, and was lost far too early in a tragic crash at the age of 41. A man of real faith, he had vision, understanding, and a deep, abiding love of the rough grain of humanity as well as of God. Other lyrics of his which are beloved to me (there are many songs) are in the song "The Color Green." Both are on his album entitled "A Liturgy, A Legacy, And A Ragamuffin Band."
Such a tough question, but a few come to mind:
1. If A Tree Falls (Bruce Cockburn)
2. And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (Eric Bogle)
3. Hurricane (Bob Dylan)
4. The Turn Of A Friendly Card (Alan Parsons Project)
5. Blow Up The Pokies (The Whitlams)
Hard to choose. Here Today, by Paul McCartney. Kathy's Song, by Paul Simon. Die Alone, by Ingrid Michaelson. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, by Neutral Milk Hotel. But there are so many good ones.
@Dean, Third Day do a great rendition of Rich Mullins' "Creed" Hard to choose just one- Bridge Over Troubled Waters; True Colours or Chisel's Flame Trees some of my favs.
Indigo Girls - Closer to Fine **there's more than one answer to these questions pointing me in this crooked line, and the less I seek my source for some difinitive - closer I am to fine"
Indigo Girls - Perfect World **we get to be the ripple in the water, we get to be the rock that's thrown...**
Transatlantic - Stranger in Your Soul - You just gotta listen to it.. it's a 30 minute progressive song about learning about yourself...
For Christian Music my all time favorites are:
Jennifer Knapp - Peace **he is my light and my salvation who have i to fear, in his secret place i'll hide and pray that i might hear a simple word, oh how i would have despaired if you would not have found me there, i can lean against your throne and find my peace. **
Vicki Yohe - Mercy Seat - In the darkness where everything is unknown i face the power of sin on my own. i did not know of a place i could go. where i could find a way to heal my wounded soul. you said i could come into his presence without fear... into the holy place where his mercy hovers near.. i'm running i'm running i'm running to the mercy seat, where Jesus is calling, he said his grace will cover me.
Joshua Radin is one of my all time favorite lyricists. He is not incredibly well known, but if you listen to his stuff you ( like myself) will wonder why.
No Envy, No Fear

Streetlight.
But I also love And So It Goes and As Time Goes By.
