Well, I heard about it a long time ago. It seemed so exciting, so dangerous and fun....but I was afraid to try it myself. But I took the leap, and once I did...well...now I can't stop.
I don't remember the year but I was recently out of high school and Larry came to my college and gave a presentation. Afterwards, I told him about a photography project I was working on and he was interested in putting it on the site but my uncoordinated self never got around to getting it going. But I got hooked on Smith and over the past 5-6 years, honestly don't remember, I have dealt with issues, events and emotions here that I wasn't able to tackle otherwise.
It was either All Things Considered or Morning Edition on NPR about two years ago. They did a spot on Six-Word Memoirs and I was intrigued... what a beautiful idea! Checked it out, created a profile and have been a regular contributor for about the past year.
My personal story. I entered and was featured in a six word radio contest on CBC, Canada's public radio. I have been thinking in sixes ever since. It was the week of Valentine's Day, and the contest was to create the best breakup line in six words. My entry was, "Just won the lottery. Bye, honey."
Okay, I confess....I had heard about six word memoirs through some media broadcast a few years ago, but didn't seek it out. Then a friend started talking about her posts on the facebook version, and I became intrigued, but never tracked down the facebook site. Then I Googled "six word memoirs" earlier this year, and found Smith. Felt welcome immediately, and very glad to be here. :)
In late 2007-2008 they had an article in our daily newspaper about the stars who were Smithmag members, SMITH Was just taking off and everyone was excited and so was I. Went online submitted my first memoir nd the rest is history.
Read in an article in the Oprah magazine in January of this year. Oprah had included about 50 or so six word memoirs. I was immediately hooked by just reading others 6WM's. Seemed fun. So I tried it myself. Logged onto the website, which the Oprah magazine provided, and the rest is history. I, too, express stuff here that I normally wouldn't express because of 'bantering' from friends.
I read a book review on the first book in 2008 and ran out to the bookstore to get it! I've always been into memoirs and with life getting in the way, there isn't much time left to write. 6 words are easy to write at any time and they have been bouncing around my head ever since.
saw an article in the newspaper many years ago and it included a six i've never forgotten: leap of faith. shit, no parachute. (if the author of that gem happens to read this, it remains one of the most brilliant sixes i've ever read.) took a very long time for me to come up with anything that i felt like submitting, but as others have said, thinking in six becomes a habit.
At Teen Arts Festival at a college. The writing seminar I attended had us write memoirs. @jl333 The presenters used the same article :) Then I googled 'six words' and found SMITH. I got my friends hooked on here too.
Opened one of my favorite drinks, an HonestTea in 2010 and there under the lid was an invitation to write a 6Word Memoir on SmithMag.com to be featured under a future HonestTea cap.
Like skyrocketjones, I also discovered Six under an Honest Tea bottle cap. I couldn't believe my good luck in finding a way to write that fits my short attention span. The bottle cap also inspired my choice of nickname.
I read a review of the first book in 2008 and ran out to get it that day. I've always loved memoirs, but never had a ton of time to write. I've been hooked ever since!
I too found about Smith Magazine on the Honest Tea bottle cap. That was March of 2011 I think and I have been hooked ever since. I also check bottle caps now, just in case there is anything else amazing hiding there.

New Years Eve 2010. That year I used Contemplative's memoir "to captivated endings and inspired beginnings" as my New Years toast.canadafreeze says,
