My rather topical answer is: When you buy it and it becomes yours. Jen and I are buying a house! What's your opinion of when bricks and mortar becomes more than the sum of its parts?
So very happy for you both! A house becomes a home when you get busy putting all your belongings in the house. For me, it was getting busy with painting the colors I wanted and decorating. We went out and bought area rugs for those marble floors. It takes time but it starting shaping up. You have to remember this was not work for us, we LOVED it. After we bought the house we were not in the best financial shape, so we took things one at a time. We had to get a brand new living room set and patio set. This was really expensive but we did it in time and so will you. I bet you will enjoy every minute of it. We still are not done but with a house you never are. Best of Luck to you both.
when love crosses the threshold. After my family, for me my home is more about the garden than decorating the house. It may sound foolish but when we first looked at our house there was a baby bearded dragon (lizard) sitting on the front lawn and I felt at home here.
Great responses, folks! For me, it will probably be the first time Jen turns to me with that look of love in her eye. My heart skips when she looks at me like that, and I can't wait to see it in the place that we'll make ours. KJ, we have a bearded dragon! They're groovy critters.
When you can paint. I pretty recently decided that since we'll probably be here until we decide to have another baby and have to move, I want this place to be Mine. So now our doorframe is purple and we have white christmas lights woven into branches to light the stairway.
From your previous comments, it sounds like you have a great place, Wench. We've painted the houses we've rented (cleared it with the landlords, of course) to make them more "homey," but there's still the knowledge that it's not ours. We're excited about the prospect of owning a spot on this earth that we call ours - and nervous about all the responsibilities that come with it.
We're buying bigger than we thought we would - or could. It's a buyer's market at the moment (if they're letting US buy, that's got to be the truth!) and this is something that we will be able to make improvements upon and use for family and guests for a long time. We may choose do downsize later if we don't want to keep up with all the room and space.
jen, dean & family - congratulations! i wish you many happy years in your home! you probably already know to do this, but - ask your neighbors if they can recommend a good plumber and a good electrician (fingers crossed there will be consensus). i found an amazing plumber by accident, and when i needed to have an appliance replaced and then later my AC repaired i called him for recommendations. i was very happy with the people he recommended, and i sleep better just knowing i have these resources.
When you feel like you belong there. I have been living in this horrible house for over a year, and there is no way in hell it is my home.

It's when you can't imagine living anywhere else. When you feel like a piece of you exists there. Reference one of my sixes past.......Home: a postcard from my soul.
