Tragically inaccurate ten-letter adjective of 1912?
Backstory
The answer is the word "unsinkable."According to Seth Borenstein of the Associated Press, "Many people think the Titanic's owners and builders called the liner 'unsinkable.' Not so. Neither made the claim, but a small publication called it 'practically unsinkable.' News reports picked up on the word."

I did read one of the books written but it was quite awhile ago. I remember reading that the Captain left the bridge of the ship for a long time. He left it in the hands of people who were not qualified, when they hit the iceberg. Am I correct in this assumption or perhaps not, but I did read it.
