I don't know why, but I consider it a hint about what's inside their hearts. If someone I know hates animals - or animals hate him or her, I typically avoid that person.
I have never actually known anyone who "hated" animals. However I've met plenty who are allergic to them, especially cats. If I ever met someone who really hated them and was cruel, I would personally hunt them down! They could never hide from me. I volunteer down at our local shelter and I actually feel love for everyone of those animals. I wish I could take them home with me but my husband thinks we have enough with our dog and cat.
Animals are excellent judges of character. My mother always told me never to date a man who disliked (or was disliked by) old people, children, or animals. So far, she has been right.
I would never have married the last guy if I'd paid attention to my setter. She was born deaf, and I had never seen her react to a person like she did to him. I now also watch the way people touch animals and babies. It's a good indicator of compassion and being emotionally connected.
So sorry to hear that Wench, that must have been difficult :-(
I have a couple friends who simply view all animals as wild, dirty, varmints. That is as odd to me as my love of furry creatures is to them.
Some people are afraid.

I used to work at an animal hospital for a vet who hated animals. I'll leave it at that. The details are too upsetting. =(Wench says,
