Cash registers, adding machines, typewriters, phones ringing, letters being opened, pen on paper, feet on pavement, "that'll be twenty-five cents", sewing machines, dinner being prepared, conversations over that dinner, kiddie matinees, a singer who can carry a tune, a tune, "that prom dress better cover your knees", condom, or nothing doing, an iron, ...I could go on.
The shrieks of kids playing in a playground, the old school kind: monkey bars, metal swings, slides, see saws. Those shrieks were both joyful and pained. There were no rubber mats or wood chips when I was a kid, just asphalt.
Roller skates on sidewalks, playing cards on wheel spokes, a record dropping on the turntable, the backyard dinner bell (from three blocks away), heel plates...
The same sound I miss I don't think kids hear these days: silence. Music playing cell phones, wifi internet everywhere, makes sure we are constantly entertained and probably over-stimulated. Sometimes silence can be better.
Wow, great stuff. So true SolitaryMan and Dynamic. How 'bout the sound of a backyard baseball game, a broken record, a cassette tape any maybe, with the advent of e-books, kindles, etc., the sound of pages turning (I hope not).
I'm 17 and can honestly say I've heard all but I think one of these...
But I'll just add: Quiet things, because half of us are almost deaf from headphones...
SMITH Magazine brings you an entirely new kind of six-word experience: Six-Word Questions. This is the place to pose a question to the SMITH community from, "What are your favorite Six-Word quotations" to challenging members to pen Six-Word Obituaries to the recently departed to Six-Word jokes and any other Six-Word question you can dream up. You can even request that the responses be in six words. Everyone has a question—what's yours?

A typewriter. A record skipping. A phone actually ring. A farm animal moo, cluck or oink. I could go on.SolitaryMan says,
