What Place Do You Remember Most?

Backstory

Hey, I'm new to SMITH and really love it, and I'm asking this question because of an exhibit we're showing at Underline Gallery in NYC. We're having a contest around this question of "Places You Remember" over on the gallery's site, so I figured I'd let the sixes know about it too, and share the contest here.

Here's how it works:
Submit your memories as part of our exhibition, INFINITE PERSPECTIVES: Places I'll Remember, happening at Underline Gallery. In 66 words or less, tell us - What Place You Remember Most - to win maps and notebooks featuring spectacular 3D vistas by world renowned cartographer Jeffrey Ambroziak. Prizes will go to the six people with the most compelling responses to our question. Submit to six-word-memoirs on Smith Mag.

More information (and inspiration) is at underlinegallery.com

BanjoDan says,

I will never forget stepping off the plane in El Salvador when I joined the Peace Corps in 1974. There was a gigantic volcano on the right of the runway and cardboard/tin shacks as far as you could see to the left. It never occurred to me then that people actually lived in those.

Amapola says,

Ocean Road... walking along the endless wild beaches in Australia and feeling overwhelmed about how far I was from everything I know too well... and then... I fell in love with Australia.

KharisJo says,

so glad you enjoyed it here, Am, Australia is a beautiful country with very friendly people.
For me Dove Lake - Cradle Mountain wilderness area in the north of Tasmania. Last time I went with my family we hiked the Dove Lake circuit in a light snowfall, with the paths and tree branches covered in snow - a winter wonderland, so different from the subtropics where I live.

Port Arthur. For Australians it epitomises man's inhumanity, both in the convict era and more recently. Yet it is surrounded by the most incredible scenery - huge oaks, wild rocky coastlines, indomitable mountains. The stone prison buildings are left unroofed, exposed to the elements. Nature persists, a powerful visual metaphor that love and beauty are eternal and transcend the sorrow of history.

MsKillie says,

My grandparent's trailerhome. I enjoyed more love and good food in that tiny little green aluminum box than anywhere else in the world!

Level1 says,

Many places, but mostly those places where I have felt a true union with nature: a glacial rock formation, the beach, the woods, a warm field on a summer's day; any place where I can feel the sun on my face and truly feel alive.

Whistler, British Columbia, in Canada. Skiing like the wind under the freshly fallen snow, surrounded by the pine trees. It felt like flying. This trip was the first time I saw snow, and that moment, the freedom... I'm sure that it'll stay with me forever.

Lighthouse Park off the coast of Vancouver, Canada. Classic waves splashing up the cliff to my face.
