Magazine fashion cities. What to wear?

Backstory

I was sitting under the heat lamps, getting my hair un-grayed, and was looking through the fashion magazines. One had an article on how different cities around the world dress. Like some cities are more casual, some are urban chic, ect. What amazed me was the price of the outfit, once you added it all up. Like $200 for a top, $600 for a skirt and so on. I have never in my life stepped out of the house wearing $1,000 worth of clothes. I don't think I could. Could you? (money not so much the issue, as the idea of it--how can a tee cost $200?)

One of my pleasures is to look at Coach bags online and read the reviews. I could never buy one because of the leather thing and where they are manufactured, but something about them still calls to me...some of the reviews talk about how they own several bags. Some have the same bag in different colors and some buy the bag and matching wallet. These women are so blase about it, like it is nothing to spend thousands of dollars a season on accessories. Sometimes I wish I could be like that, but I am too practical. I'd never make a good celebrity! I'm still trying to work up to ATs tip #1 about sheer blouses and camisoles. Saw a sheer blouse at Kohls for $30 the other day. Considering it.

So is it true? Does where you live determine the fashion sense and how much seems "normal" for clothes? Does a $200 tee fit, wear better than a $40 one? What do you think?

Dress to express, not to impress (in six). Fashion should be fun- it's about finding a style that you like. It shouldn't be a form of elitism and snobbery, but often is. I like classic seperates that you can mix and some of my favs have cost only a few dollars in charity shops.

I so agree. Love your six. If I'm not comfortable in my clothes, I won't wear them. They will sit in my closet. One of the cities in the mag was Sydney, Australia. Had a shot of the Opera House in the background while the model was wearing a $650 jacket. And some $300 sunglasses. I know it is all marketing, but for a moment I thought, "Well, guess I can't visit Australia then! No wardrobe!" Just kidding! :) Thanks for your gteat comment, KharisJo!

Where I work, there are a lot of well-to-do families. Fashion is everything to these people...but more importantly, it's all about name brand. Most of these people are super superficial. Even their kids don't know the meaning of money, and the kids all have name brand stuff. The woman in the neighborhood only seem to care what brand handbag you are carrying, or what kind of sunglasses. Screw that crap. My $5.00 shirt wears just the same as their $500 dollar shirt.

Yay jl333! That's what I thought! There are times when I feel very comf in my clothes, but every once in a while....the brand name, well to do ladies in my town make me feel frumpy. They don't make me, I just succumb to frumpy. I tend to wear my clothes over and over so they do get worn. And wearing means washing. Thanks for uplifting words. I found another sheer top in Sears tonight as I was walking through to get to parking lot. Even less than the price at Kohls and I like the color. Think I'll give ATs tip#1 a whirl this weekend!

Df, please feel free to visit Australia! Most Aussies are very down to earth and casual-smart casual will get you around most places, bit more dressy for special occasions. 650 dollar jackets not necessary and 300 dollar sunnies just as likely to get lost at the beach as a 20 dollar pair :)

When I travel to other countries, I do try to wear what the locals wear. In Paris, all of the ladies had a scarf of some kind. Got mine for $10 at a discount store and avoided looking too much like a tourist. At home, my priorities are colorful, comfortable, and machine washable. I don't look like I stepped out of a fashion magazine, but I'm okay with that.

KJ- Sunnies! Cute term.

And thanks, mzejay, for your comment. Makes lots of sense about wearing what locals wear. I am normally OK about how I dress. I've learned not to look at those fashion magazines because they sometimes make me feel bad. I should have stuck with the travel mags they had!

Today I got some new things at Kohls. Decided against sheer blouse, but did get a white pull over sweater with loose knit--(like little holes). Got a sunset gold tank to wear underneath. My version of ATs #1 tip. I'm going to give it a whirl tomorrow. Working up to the sheerer stuff! I got all the way to the checkout before deciding against it! Progress! :)

Yay fashion-as-you-like-it!
