18. Within a few weeks after graduating high school. I did share an apartment with a friend, but we both worked and went to school, paid our our bills and split rent / utilities 50 /50.

marymc says,

32. I got married a month after graduation from college. Had a baby 5 years later. 5 years after that my ex moved to CA from NY without us. I had to pack, close our business, collect unpaid invoices and sell the house all while having one leg in a cast from hip to ankle. I had never lived alone before then, and suddenly I had all these "extras". After that, I knew I could handle almost anything.

Wench says,

I lived on my own at 17. But I was a trust-fund baby, so my bills were technically paid by an account my grandfather left for me, while I was in school. That's how I paid rent and bills for a long time, although I also worked because there wasn't really any money left over for food or other expenses. It wasn't until I finished college that my husband and I completely paid for our own bills, at which point I was 22.

MsKillie says,

When I was 19 I was living in Colorado with plans to become a resident for cheaper college tuition. I took a year off of classes, had no insurance and only worked a few hours a day at a coffee shop (my boyfriend and I were sharing his car). I was broker than broke and bored out of my mind. So, I moved back home and mooched off the folks for a few more years while I went back to college. When I was 22 I got my first apartment in university student housing with my 5-month old baby in tow. It was tough being a full-time college student, a part-time barista and editor, and a single mama, but I loved every moment! I will never forget the things I learned, the challenges I overcame all by myself and the memories of that little apartment will stay with me forever.

Moved out when I was 24, but paid rent to live at home, and covered my own bills starting at the age of 18

For me it was a slow transition between 18 and 25.

mzejay says,

I was a boomerang kid (alternating between living at home and at school) during college and graduate school. I did not completely move out and stop looking back until 25.
