Do you fear being the first?

Backstory

Often, the first one to do something is lauded, but it can be difficult to be the first to .... (Fill in the blank). If something hasn't been done before, there are inherent dangers that it may not work. Any thoughts?

Two things came immediately to mind. Hit the dance floor, and step into the buffet line (unless you are at an event where they tell you when to go).

To answer both, no. ;)

I posted a memoir about this and included a picture. We were at a graduation party. It was dull as dirt even though they had rented a sumo wrestling pit, including fat suits and helmets. I was dying to have a go and convinced another woman to do it with me. We started talking smack at each other. Voices were raised and wagers were placed. It was awesome. Six months later, whenever we get together with people who were there, it gets brought up and everybody laughs. It was so worth it.

And still to this day, I think marymc should have the sumo wrestler picture as her profile pic!

I had to look it to refresh my memory. Perfection on so many levels:-)

I am always afraid of being first. In my experience, there is always a reason no one has gone before; a reason I am not aware of.

I went to a 50th bday party and the theme was 50s Prom. We all wore prom dresses and guys wore white jackets, black pants and colorful ties. We finished dinner and dancing was about to start. I went to the restroom and when I came back, the bday girl was dancing with her husband (fast dance). They had been dancing a while and no one was joining them.

So, very unlike me, I grabbed my date and went out. Fully expecting others would follow me. My big moment to be the leader.....

No one followed, so I slunk (yes, slunk in my 50s prom dress-- not easy to be inconspicuous) off ..the dance floor. Someone explained it had been announced this was like their first dance (like at a wedding). So no one was supposed to join....I still feel humiliated to this day. Proms are so stressful . !!!!
