Have you ever withheld from someone, especially from a loved one, bad news? If so, from whom did you withhold it and for how long? What was your reason for withholding the bad news?
When my children were very young, (under 10) I withheld the news that their beloved cat was dead. I had to stop crying myself and gain control so I could tell them in a way that they would understand without making them too upset. Today they claim they knew it was bad news because my eyes were swollen and they knew I had been crying. Can't fool kids for long. They accepted her death and were sad for one day. Me, about two weeks!
At work, I had to withhold the news that our owner's daughter (she was in her 20s) from the rest of the office for about 4 hours. It's a small office and one of the employees was a best friend of the daughter. I kept going outside to make phone calls for the owners (both husband and wife). People kept asking me what was going on and I couldn't say anything.
