Boyfriend. Has what he wants. Like maryjane, he's particular about his fishing equipment too. His other interest is working out. He has more than enough work out clothes. The couple things he has mentioned, he went out and bought himself within a couple days of mentioning it.
My father...he is retired and has very simple needs, is still wearing the same clothes he wore in the 70s, and lives with family who meet all his household-related needs. And he frequently prefaces the holiday season with an entire list of things he DOESN'T need, such as sweaters, gloves, hats, golf balls.
Hubby says he doesn't need or want anything. I buy him clothes that he desperately needs (i.e. they fit and aren't stained or ripped). They sit in his closet for a couple years til he "discovers" them....comes out of the bedroom in a "new" outfit saying, "Did you buy me this?"
My mom. She doesn't like anything. When my parents got married, the rings they ordered didn't arrive on time, so my dad wove rings out of grass. They still have them. For their 20th anniversary, my dad bought them new, custom-made rings, with a woven grass design and presented them at Christmas. It was extremely sweet and romantic. My mom got furious and spent the entire day crying because of the money he'd spent - she didn't express any gratitude, or sentimentalism, or anything and she doesn't wear the ring. She isn't an easy person to get gifts for.
She also just hates Christmas. Her mom was Martha Stewart in a Stepford Wife body - her Christmases were perfect. And my mom feels like she needs to measure up, can't, and then hates herself for it. Nobody holds her to that standard at all, but she still gets stressed about it. So instead of just being happy with what she CAN do, she gets absolutely miserable. One year, she refused to put up a Christmas tree at all. Another year, she knocked it over. One year, she opened everybody's gift except mine - for no apparent reason whatsoever, she refused to open it. She hates Christmas. And she feels much better, when she's miserable, if everyone else is, too. So she tries to make sure that happens.
