There's a really terrible MAD TV skit about a new diet ("Simply eat less and move more!" "What's the catch?"). It's meant to be humorous, but there's truth to it. Getting your heart rate up, just going for a long walk or jog, being more judicious about portion sizes and trying to cut back on snacks and foods late at night, that all helps. I really think the biggest thing is just getting your heart rate up (if that is considered safe by your Dr.).
I went running for a while with my husband, who has run fifteen miles just for the fun of it. After about a quarter of a mile, I felt like I was dying and wanted to give up. He said to just keep moving, slow down a little to catch your breath but don't stop. It takes a lot of discipline, something I'm lacking. If you have the money or a willing, knowledgeable friend, a trainer is helpful. My friend has lost about 35 pounds in the past six months with a trainer and the Weight Watchers diet.
Jen and I used weight watchers to lose weight. We followed the point values and stuck with it. I lost 40 and she lost close to 30. Once I hit my desired weight, I started running again. It's been real work, but no one is going to be fit by sitting on the sofa and thinking about being fit. It takes real work and, yes, it takes self-denial, which is something that our society really seems to suck at lately.
The no meat is very true. When I became a vegetarian I lost quite a bit of weight.
