In Russia, a three-girl band entered the largest Orthodox church wearing ski masks and sang a song the lyrics of which I'm not going to post (although they can be found online). They were arrested and given two years in prison.
I happen to be an Orthodox Christian and so I feel like maybe I'm a bit biased. But this isn't the first 'performance' of its kind. One of the singers and her husband also went into a Russian museum, stripped naked and had public sex while being photographed, and on another occasion, one of the members publicly masturbated with a chicken leg. They've developed a reputation for shock value.
Western media hasn't really explained the whole picture, and on the basis of freedom of speech, artists such as Madonna and Paul McCartney have spoken in their support.
But religious persecution in Russia has obviously been an issue in the past, and the wounds are still deep. Should these girls get two years in prison for what is arguably a religious hate crime? Or is this an overreaction, are they political heroes?
Ah... Hadn't heard any of this. I would say the arrest and media circus that followed is exactly what they were looking for. I wish the public would learn to not react to stunts like these. Without the attention, they would give up eventually.
