Anyone know this quote? Author? Work?

Backstory

this quote came back to me not long ago. i have no idea who said it or if it was part of a longer work. couldn't find it on any "look up quotes" sites. appreciate any help! here it is:
"friendship is the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with someone, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words."

Bevvie says,

George Eliot?

MO_Thoughts2 says,

Dinah Maria (Mulock) Craik (1826-1887). the quote is from Craik's novel, A Life for a Life, published in 1859, from Chapter 16 of the novel.

The author of that quotation is Dinah Craik. You can find the quotation at the following web address: www.quotegarden.com/best-friends.html
The Quote Garden is the only place where I've been able to find the quotation.

Bevvie says,

you will find that a large number of web sites give credit to the novelist George Eliot(Mary Anne Evans) for this quote! (the quote is in more places than just The Quote Garden!)

very interesting that two people have received credit for the same quote! might make a unique research project for someone.

NumbrOneAunt says,

thanks so much, everyone! just love this quote, and the issue of the differing attributions is fascinating.
