my autistic son Tom is now 22, has cert in business, works, drives and socialises independently at local church. Hopes to live independently in a year or two. Went to Japan with Lifestream, an Aust organization for people with disabilities last year. He was diagnosed at 2 and has had a lot of support in his school years, but has been through depressions and some really hard times. Autism has placed tremendous strains on our family, marriage and work. Personally I replaced a promising career with caring for him and returned to work at a much lower level to eliminate stress. However Autism has added a dimension to us that would never be there otherwise. I'm involved in pastoral care work and know it's made me more empathic of others going through difficult experiences. Would be interested to read a backstory mourningdove. all the best to you and your family. Kj :)
Autism has affected our family indirectly. We have at least five friends with autism. I also have two nephews with it. Breaks my heart such sweet children, too. We have chosen to separate/defer our two-year old's vaccines as long as possible. Don't trust the medical community of this one.
My 26 year old son has it. It has put a huge strain on our life. He did manage to get a associate degree in arts, and got his drivers license this year : )He struggles with depression, loneliness , and rarely leaves the house. I don't know what to do with him?!?
Sigh....
I've been working/teaching children with asd since 1992 (part-time now full time) I love them so much and in a small way I hope I help the parents too. Best wishes to you all.
