Overdue by about 3 1/2 weeks, I was young and tired of being fat and wobbly. Wasting time at the zoo, we thought it would be cool to get a picture standing next to the beautiful geese. Climbing into the exhibit, I stood next to the pond until a huge white goose charged me and bit my ass! I ran, jumped a three foot wall, leapt over a rope fence … Read more »
"Buy a dog and relax."
The next week we took my doctor's advice and adopted a dog named Panda. Soon she ruled our home, but also our hearts. After two years of trying to get pregnant, I'd given up all hope. Panda allowed me to think about something other than holding a baby. A few months later, though, our queen needed to take up residence in a new dog house … Read more »
My sister became stranger with every passing day of her pregnancy. She stopped eating polysyllabic foods, and raged against her family and friends. "You all want my baby. Admit it, you are jealous," was a common refrain heard around the house. But what really concerned me was her sudden obsession with the placenta.
"I'm going to eat it."
"To regain the lost nutrients."
"Take a vitamin."

Fatherless, One word story not six.
He left to go to work even though I had been in labor all night long. My sister arrived, much later. Call him? Why bother. It must have been shocking for her to see me converted into this animal-like state but she sidestepped the vomit, played it stoic and cut watermelon into small pieces for me to eat. In the cab, we tell the driver that I am in labor. … Read more »
Late one night after stuffing my face with spaghetti, icecream & loads of other delicacies I go into labour. Need to get rid of all of these goodies via enema. Hours of "you'll be ok" then feet up in stirrups as the little fella decides he's three weeks early & does a U-turn. Sign on room door "Frank Breech in Progress". Ok so I feel a little guilty. I didn’t jump up and down when the test read positive. I now hear of all the sad “cannot have children” stories and I feel guilty. We decided it was what we wanted but I’m a quiet person and don’t get excited easily. It has all gone really well so far, although I appear calm I am terrified deep … Read more »
Three a.m. and the contractions were instensifying. It was hard to be calm when something this momentous was happening. Everything at our house was laid out and awaiting the arrival of our midwife, Kate, who was expected soon. We held each other in the quiet of the night and the fear of the unkown. Kate arrived and soon, our beautiful, chubby, hairless daughter was born. A door opened in our … Read more »
Gaining weight when I was pregnant was like trying to "nail jello to a wall." My doctor and her nurses would shake their heads and drill me on what I'd been eating. When I replied "EVERYTHING! I'm JUST NOT gaining weight!" They would roll their eyes in disbelief.
Then week 30 hit, and so did the 20 pounds and stretch marks to match! My doc's nurses cheered me on … Read more »
It was cosmic intervention that he was in town that day-and so was I-and that we saw each other. We spent the whole day together-I didn't know I was in labor. I was to pick up my then-husband at the airport that night-but I never made it-I was at the hospital-still with him. Ex-husband arrived 30 minutes after our son. I don't remember what he said … Read more »
Her daddy looked at her, freshly minted, brand new girl - pitying almost - first thinghe said, to his second born daughter, "You're never going to get anything new...". What? Oh - of course, she would be part of hand-me-down city now...Then, a reflex, he checked his watch, noting, as the doctor did, what time the baby was born, laughed crazily. What is it, I wondered. "The minute she was … Read more »
After a long, slow motion day of seemingly endless contractions, during which I came dangerously close to an emergency c-section for stalled labor, things finally got going and the delivery room became a flurry of activity. Ninety minutes of hard pushing later, the obstetrician pulled my husband from where he was supporting my back and shoulders down to the action, shouting, “Look! The baby’s coming! You can see the head!” … Read more »

As the labor pains started, I looked at my husband. He was amazing. He held my hand and brushed the wispies out of my face. He told me how beautiful I looked and how amazing I was to be giving him a third child. When the doctor entered, my daughter's head was crowning and my husband watched in awe. I pushed once and nothing. … Read more »
For a woman who planned pregnancy, I was petrified of the arrival of our baby. For the 9 months of pregnancy, you learn what to eat, what not to eat, what your unborn baby is doing, why you pee a thousand times a day, what to expect during delivery – but all I could think of was – after this.....then what? A real little person, who depends on me … Read more »
"I won't feel the same about you if you make me use condoms," he said. I got a pregnancy and a husband I didn't want. I would lie awake wishing that the baby wouldn't be born. My waters broke at 28 weeks. During the third night in hospital under observation, I felt something tickling between my legs. Reached down to investigate and a tiny hand curled around my finger. Mid September, still at least a week before I was expecting my period, had not been trying for a baby. Walking through the old part of the city with a friend, we stopped to admire three cottonwood trees- easily two hundred years old. As I put my arms around one of them I thought to myself, "My belly is between the oldest life I've ever touched and the … Read more »
