In his "Handbook to the Country," BEYOND YOUR DOORSTEP (1962), Hal Borland wrote, "First frost often comes in late September. If light, it does no harm to the color in the trees. Hard frost kills the color before it really comes. The old myth of Jack Frost painting the leaves is all wrong, contrary to fact.
