Panetta: Green security through private jets

Backstory

Speaking Wednesday to the Environmental Defense Fund, Panetta claimed: "The area of climate change has a dramatic impact on national security." We've heard this before. Rising sea levels, droughts, storms that are more frequent and intense — they're all going to cause people to migrate in mass numbers, become violent and start wars.

Five years ago the United Nations warned that global warming would create conflict. Two years back the Pentagon categorized it as a destabilizing force.

Panetta should be ashamed for pandering to an environmental group.

Since being named defense secretary in July, he has churned out tons of carbon dioxide, making more than two dozen trips from Washington to his family's walnut farm in Monterey, Calif. He flies in the privacy of a military jet, each round trip costing roughly $32,000.

Panetta says he regrets the "costs that the taxpayer has to pick up," but he seems disinterested in his carbon footprint. Doesn't he know his voluminous CO2 emissions make it harder for him to defend the country?
