I grew up in Southern California. At the local mall, there was a window where you could stand and watch the ladies at See's Candy Company hand dip chocolates. My dad and I did this often and logged quite a bit of time at that window -- fascinating! And then there was the kid-sized rocking chair I sat in after dinner, in front of the TV watching "Howdy Doody" (in the dark -- so much more dramatic!), with my own personal candy bar that had come out of the package (remember those long, cardboard candy bar packages that held 6-12 bars at a time?) my dad had tucked away. I don't ever remember being without chocolate (or much else).
