How I Found David Bowie in a Record Store
"Do think my boyfriend and I could get a little service?" she asked. "Sure thing," I replied. "What are you looking for?"
For a small-town Arizona boy recently moved to Hollywood, getting a job at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard was hitting the big time.
I'm totally dating myself by telling you I worked in the cassette section of the store. On one very slow night, I was working with another employee behind the counter when one of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen walked in, accompanied by a man. I nudged my cohort: "Did you see that chick?" He was equally amazed by her hotness. As we drooled over our momentary obsession, she turned and walked over to the counter. My hands were sweating.
"Do think my boyfriend and I could get a little service?" she asked. "Sure thing," I replied. "What are you looking for?" The whole time, being so infatuated with this woman, we never noticed that her frail little boyfriend was none other than David Bowie.
"Can you help me find someCDs?" he asked. "Uh...um, sure, Mr. Bowie," I said. We walked around the store looking for different new and old music. I actually got a peek into the musical tastes of one of the most influential rock stars on the planet!
After cruising the aisles for about 20 minutes, I ran over and grabbed a copy of one of his records (this was back when there were records). He signed it for me and thanked me for the help.
And then his girlfriend gave me a kiss! (Nah, just kidding about that part.)
