lizbeth01_2.gifWow. Take a long look at FOR REAL, a nonfiction webcomic about the lives of three immigrant teens living in New York City. It starts with the stories of Adriana (age 17, from Venezuela), Lizbeth (13, Ecuador) and Sonam (14, Tibet) and drawn with an appropriately raw style and has pages of their stories and links that begin to give you a peek into where they’ve come from and what their lives are about now. It’s a project of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the kind of storytelling technique that makes us giddy at SMITH.

I’m so grateful that there are people out there who are able to simplify stories rather than getting caught up in distracting technology. As a result, we now know more about immigrant teens in a way that is not contrived. We also know that there is a cool museum in downtown NYC and that they know a REAL storyteller. Rock on!
