Will Trade Six-Word Memoirs For Shots

January 19th, 2007 by Larry Smith

362205304_8b810568c8.jpgA merry mélange of writers, artists, comic creators, bloggers, photographers, friends, and neighbors got together at the sexy, sumptuous Sutra Lounge on Wednesday night to celebrate SMITH Magazine’s one-year anniversary and toast the launch of our new webcomic, A.D. New Orleans After the Deluge. Objectively, the night was amazing. Anyone who handed the bartender a six-word memoir got a shot in return, the lip balm flowed freely and 100 lucky souls left with DJ Spooky’s Middle Eastern hip hop mix, which he made especially for the party (an essay, podcast and set list from the CD is here).
Thanks to DJ Maya for the perfect sounds, Ariel from Sutra for the perfect setting and Anthony Lappé for a perfect video loop (pictured: one of the six-word memoirs in the loop). And I can’t express enough gratitude to the staff, contributors and readers who made year one so memorable. stonedboned.jpg

Wondering just how dynamite Memoirville editor Rachel Fershleiser and writer-about-town Rachel Kramer Bussel are? Ever think you’d see an editor at Playgirl and the top dog at Men’s Journal in the same room? Curious who’s trying to snuggle up to Mr. Smith’s lady? All this and lots of comic makers with facial hair on the SMITH Party Flickr stream.
