Dear Smith…

Tis the season to hear from your third grade teacher, old pals living abroad or your second cousin twice removed—or something. The Christian Science Monitor had a great story about the importance of Christmas cards and how these “personal connections… are more important than ever” because they “serve as a barometer of people’s lives.”
Word.
I love getting a year’s worth of hand-written gossip—oh, and the Hallmark card is nice too.

Yes — Christmas/holiday cards are important, no? They’re the one time a year, in some cases, that I reach out to certain old friends that I may no longer see in person each year. It’s like a ritual of affirmation that someone is still in your life. And there’s something about that real, three-dimensional card. Maybe it’s the physicality of it, or the fact that it’s marginally harder to select, inscribe and stamp a card than it is to fire off an email; it makes a connection that email just can’t. Anyway. They’re a little thing that’s also a big deal, and I like that.
